And here's the purple after the masks are removed.

This is always an interesting stage in the painting because now that the background is complete you should get a good idea what the finished painting is going to look like. However, in reality it doesn't work out that way. The last few sessions will transform this painting! (I think).

I'm going to paint a purple base on the last major piece of white canvas and so I've masked off the circle I don't want painted. I've also masked the straight line of brown as painting to a straight line is difficult and this will save time. Strangely, painting the curve is simpler done by hand and not masked.

This completes the right side of the painting. Now for the last piece of background work before I move onto the foreground stuff.

I've now added the first set of stripes on top of the yellow ochre base. I've had to leave enough gap between them to allow for two more sets of stripes to be added also.

Four coats of Yellow ochre later and the base for this section is done. I'm going to paint three different coloured stripes on top of this.

I've masked the inside of the curve just to make the right hand side easier to paint. Its not difficult to hand paint the curve its just simpler if its masked.

Now where's that Yellow ochre?

I've unmasked the brown but you'll notice I've left some masking in place. This is because I need to mask off the small circle in the brown section while I paint the silver dots. This will happen later in the painting but the masking may as well stay in place.
